Diane and Gary Buckley Endowed Scholarship for Teacher Education

The Diane and Gary Buckley Endowed Scholarship for Teacher Education was established by Gary Buckley, a Seattle University alumnus, and Diane Buckley, a graduate of the SU College of Education.  The Buckleys have spent their entire professional lives as educators.  They wish to provide for a teacher education student who is pursuing a career in education.

Amount Awarded: $2000-$2500

Duration: One year with the option for additional funds for a continuing student

Scholarships Available: One or two

Application Deadline: March 1, 2019

Criteria for Selection:

To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must:

  • Be enrolled as a student at Seattle University in a College of Education program with junior, senior or graduate standing for the quarter awarded (sophomores may apply in spring for fall funding);
  • Demonstrate financial need;
  • Demonstrate experiences that illustrate a commitment to the mission of the College of Education; educating the whole person and empowering leaders for a just and humane world.
  • Represent and/or demonstrate experiences illustrating commitment to historically excluded or marginalized communities.
  • May be currently working in schools/field of education with a goal to pursue education certification/credentials.

Kenneth R. Hill Endowed Scholarship for Teacher Education

The Kenneth R. Hill Endowed Scholarship for Teacher Education (MIT and EDLS) was created by Kenneth R. Hill, a graduate of the College of Education, who spent his career in elementary education. This scholarship provides scholarships to graduate students in the College of Education Teacher Education Program to support students who wish to pursue a career in elementary education.

Amount Awarded: $5000

Duration: One year

Scholarships Available: One-Two

Application Deadline:  March 1 for Fall cohort and Oct. 1 for Spring cohort

 Criteria for Selection:

 To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must:

  • Be enrolled in a teacher certification program either within the College of Education, or supported by the College of Education through an SU campus partner program with junior, senior or graduate standing (sophomores may apply in spring for fall funding);
  • Demonstrate financial need;
  • Demonstrate an understanding and dedication to the importance of promoting the field of education for non-traditional students and students from traditionally underrepresented populations as classroom teachers; and
  • Demonstrate a career goal of pursuing elementary education; if no student meets this criteria in a particular year, then the award can be made to a student pursuing secondary education.

Michelle Jordan Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Michelle Jordan Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established by Richard and Karen Tonelli in honor of their daughter, Michelle Lynn Jordan, who taught grade school and had a passion for teaching foreign languages. 

 Amount Awarded: $2000-$2500

Duration: One year

Scholarships Available: One

Application Deadline: March 1, 2019

 Criteria for Selection:

 To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must:

  • Be enrolled as a student at Seattle University in a College of Education program with junior, senior or graduate standing for the quarter awarded (sophomores may apply in spring for fall funding);
  • US citizen and a graduate of a Washington State high school.
  • Has a high school or College/University GPA of at least a 3.0.
  • Strong preference for students pursuing teaching with an interest in teaching foreign languages.

Karyn and Paul Pasquier “Finding Wings to Fly” Endowed Scholarship

The Karyn and Paul Pasquier “Finding Wings to Fly” Endowed Scholarship was established by Karyn and Paul Pasquier, graduates of the College of Education and of Albers School of Business respectively.  Karyn taught in Catholic schools in Seattle and Paul enjoyed a successful career at the Boeing Company. 

 Amount Awarded: $2665

Duration: One year with the option to renew for a continuing student.  The student recipient must meet the original selection criteria for renewal.

Scholarships Available: One

Application Deadline: March 1, 2019

 Criteria for Selection:

 To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must:

  • Be enrolled as a full time, undergraduate student at Seattle University. The undergraduate students eligible are transfer students and students in junior and senior standings;
  • Be in good academic standing with the University;
  • Demonstrate financial need;
  • Be enrolled in a teacher certification program supported by the College of Education and its campus college partner programs;
  • Be a student who illustrates the mission of Seattle University: “Empowering leaders for a just and humane world” as determined by the scholarship selection committee or the Dean of the College of Education

Joanne, Dorothy, and Albert Schumacher Endowed Scholarship

The Joanne, Dorothy, and Albert Schumacher Endowed Scholarship was established by Joanne Schumacher, a graduate of the College of Education.  Joanne taught elementary school for more than 30 years in Germany and in the Renton School District. 

 Amount Awarded: $2250 or more  

Duration: One year with the option for a continuing student

Scholarships Available: One or multiple

Application Deadline: March 1, 2019

Criteria for Selection:

 To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must:

  • Be enrolled in a teacher certification program within the College of Education with junior, senior or graduate standing;
  • Demonstrate financial need.
