Tips for Success

Networking Tips

  • Think about why you chose to attend LinkUp, what is your goal while meeting the mentors?
  • Be prepared with a 30-60 second introduction of yourself (an elevator pitch)
  • Have a short list of prepared questions to ask the mentors
  • Update or create a Linked In profile
  • Attend the virtual event, Preparing for LinkUp Workshop event date TBD.

What to do after LinkUp

Be proactive! These alumni and friends have joined this event to help you, so please take the time to reach out to at least one mentor for a follow up meeting. They have volunteered to participate in LinkUp, because they want to see our current students succeed. Those that have joined want to hear from you after the event, please reach out within 48 hours of LinkUp concluding.

Conversation Starters

We know that networking can be daunting and/or feel awkward. The goal is to quickly move conversations into professional pathways and journeys. You want to gain insight that you will only be able to get at this event!

Use these prompts to start your mentor discussions more smoothly:

  • Briefly share your personal and professional history
  • Share highlights of your SU and college experience
  • Ask about the mentor’s experience while at SU. What organizations/clubs were they a part of?
  • Ask about the mentor’s professional journey. How did they get to where they are today?
  • Share tentative plans for your professional journey following graduation
  • Talk about your favorite SU tradition or location on campus
