Tips for Success

How to Prepare

  • Think about your career journey, what were some of the triumphs and challenges along the way?
  • What pieces of advice did your mentors share with you?
  • Are there any specific skills that your company or industry prefers to see in potential employees coming from undergraduate programs?

Talking with Students

  • Students may come prepared with a 30-60 second elevator pitch and a short list of questions for you.
  • Some may bring copies of their resume for your feedback.
  • The majority of attending students will be majoring in the College of Arts & Sciences.
  • For some students, this may be their first experience networking with professionals

LinkUp targets undergraduate College of Arts and Science students

  • Graduate students from the College of Arts and Sciences are invited to participate
  • We also welcome Seattle U students from other colleges and programs

Conversation Starters

Students may be nervous (you may be too). Use these prompts to start your networking rounds more smoothly:

  • Briefly share your personal and professional history
  • Share highlights of your SU and college experience
  • What academic learning helped prepare you for work in the professional world?
  • Talk about how you juggle the demands of professional and personal life
  • Ask about the student's experience while at SU. What organizations/clubs were they a part of?
  • Ask about the student's tentative plans for their first job or expected first position following graduation
  • Talk about your favorite SU tradition or location on campus
  • What would you do in college if you could do it all over again?

The goal is to quickly move conversations into professional pathways and journeys.

As much as possible, avoid surface level conversation topics such as the weather.
