Pandemic, Protests, and Perseverance: Learning from the Experiences of BIPOC Nursing Students through Participatory Photography

You are invited to view a new photography exhibit on display during Fall Quarter in the Student Gallery Space of the Student Center (3rd floor hall, across from the Office of Wellness and Health Promotion). The exhibit, entitled Pandemic, Protests, and Perseverance: Learning from the Experiences of BIPOC Nursing Students through Participatory Photography, is jointly produced by the College of Nursing, the Division of Student Development, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. It showcases the photographs of six nursing students who worked with Dr. Jennifer Fricas during Summer 2021.

The goal of the project was to provide an opportunity for BIPOC nursing students to creatively share their experiences of dealing simultaneously with the COVID-19 pandemic, police brutality and the grassroots protests against it and for racial justice, and their ongoing formation as nursing professionals. Students used the photovoice method to produce their photos, titles, and captions, which are organized into themes of coping, community, and continuity. The aim of the photo exhibit is to encourage understanding, conversation, and inclusive changes in our university policies and procedures to better support BIPOC students. The exhibit invites viewer interaction through an on-site QR code which links to a website with more photos and a chance to provide feedback and/or express interest in being involved in a future photography project for BIPOC students at SU.
