This fall, Mirette Aziz, MBA, RDCS, RDMS took on the role of Director for the Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Ultrasound (DIUS) program at SU College of Nursing.

Aziz, an alumna of the SU DIUS program, returned to SU in 2019 as a faculty member and clinical coordinator for the program. She said, as an alum the program “I have a lot of motivation in growing its success and look forward to being able to serve the program in a bigger capacity to graduate the best future sonographers to join the ultrasound community.”

Originally born in Cairo, Egypt, Aziz, and her family, migrated to the U.S. when she was 11 years old with “around 3 English words in my dictionary,” she said, and after arriving learned the “bulk of my English from watching cartoons.”

“Being raised in a family of physicians of multiple specialties,” Aziz said, she decided to pursue a career as a sonographer, because “I've always been drawn to the medical imaging aspect of health care. I started pursuing volunteer opportunities in the field and part-time positions in medical transcription while in high school, which solidified my passion for pursuing this career. I especially enjoy that sonography allows me to be in the front-line of solving a piece of the puzzle for my patients.”

When asked what her favorite part of teaching in the DIUS program has been since returning, Aziz said, “I really enjoy mentoring and watching the students' growth and preparing them for their first step out into the real world.”

In her free time, Aziz says she loves “anything hands-on, like gardening, furniture remodeling, and performing hair and skin care on volunteers in my circle of family and friends. I love to spend any remaining free time with my family doing DIY projects.”

The program offers a Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Ultrasound and Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Diagnostic Ultrasound with three curriculum tracks in General, Vascular, and Cardiac sonography. To learn more about this program click here.
