Sign of the Times

Dear friends,

We have entered into the month of November - a month designated as a special time of remembrance. We remember, celebrate, and continue our love for those who have stepped into eternity.

We ritualize this in the celebration of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, also known by many communities as Día de los Muertos. Mexican culture speaks of three deaths: the first one is when your body gives way to lifelessness; the second is when you return to mother earth; and the third and final death is when you’re no longer remembered. Remembrance is important. It reminds us that nothing can separate us from the people we love, not even death. And while we may feel that we are not able to touch those who have stepped into eternity beyond the touch of death, they leave with us their memories, their love, their laughter, their dreams. They give to us what writer Edward Hays beautifully described as “something that no thief can steal, the memories of our time together: the tender, love filled moments, the successes we have shared, the hard times that brought us closer, the roads we have walked side-by-side."

Our prayer this month is that all that we loved continue to find expression in the ways we love one another now and face whatever the future holds together.

In peace,
Dr. Jeanette Rodriguez
