Learn About the NROTC

The University of Washington NROTC unit, one of the first six established in the United States in 1926, has a long-standing tradition of excellence in producing outstanding Junior Officers for the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Since 1982, the unit has maintained a cross-town agreement with Seattle University, allowing students to fully participate in the NROTC program while pursuing their degrees at Seattle University. We take great pride in our program of mental, moral and physical development that shapes young men and women from both institutions into principled leaders in the naval service.

The unit is comprised of Midshipmen, Officer Candidates and enlisted Marines in the MECEP program. Midshipmen can apply for the NROTC national 4-year scholarship, or directly to the unit as part of the college program and can commission into the Navy or Marine Corps.

The unit conducts regular training to further the development of its members, including Naval Science classes, physical training, field exercises, summer cruises, regulation drill and extracurricular opportunities. These opportunities include the annual Northwest Navy competition, Navy and Marine Corps Birthday celebrations, our sailing team and more.

Upon graduation, members of the battalion commission as Ensigns in the Navy or Second Lieutenants in the Marine Corps. They have a term of obligated service ranging between 4 and 8 years, depending on what branch and community they select.

Learn more at the UW NROTC Webpage.

Unit Life

There are several recurring unit activities each week that all members of the battalion participate in. These activities are held in the morning to minimize conflict with academic schedules. On Mondays, Midshipmen conduct physical training (PT) with their assigned companies. On Tuesdays, the battalion conducts Leadership Lab, which includes guest speakers, military instruction and professional development. Following lab, Midshipmen wear their uniforms to class. On Wednesdays, the entire battalion conducts PT under the leadership of the Physical Training Instructor (PTI). Freshman Midshipmen also participate in regulation drill on Thursdays.

UW Campus Attendance

Navy Option students who attend Seattle University will complete Monday PT on the SU campus; however, they must travel to the University of Washington (UW) campus for Tuesday Lab and Wednesday Battalion PT. Marine Option students are expected to be present on the UW campus each morning, Monday through Friday.

Scholarships

National Scholarship

The national 4-year NROTC scholarship provides full tuition and fees for Seattle University, along with a monthly stipend. Recipients of the scholarship participate in the unit and commission as Navy or Marine Corps Officers upon graduation. Following graduation, the newly commissioned Officers serve a minimum of between 4 and 8 years in their chosen branch, depending on their selected warfare community. Learn more about the eligibility requirements and how to apply at the UW NROTC page.

Sideload Scholarship

If you weren’t selected for the national scholarship, it’s still possible to participate in NROTC, get a scholarship and commission. After participating in the unit as a college programmer for a year, Midshipmen may apply for a sideload scholarship which pay the same as the national scholarship but only for 1, 2 or 3 years, depending on how much time in college the student has left. More Sideload Scholarship information can be found on the UW NROTC scholarship page.

College Program

The college program provides a way to participate in the unit without a scholarship. Programmers participate in all unit activities except summer cruise, and their tuition is not paid for. However, they can apply for a sideload scholarship after participating in the unit for a year. Applications for the college program are submitted directly to the unit. For more information, including eligibility and how to apply, visit the UW NROTC College Program page.
