Dr. Catherine Punsalan-Manlimos believes that “attention to context is critical and one particular context is divisiveness - inability to hear one another and see good in one another.”

A professor in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, Dr. Punsalan-Manlimos is the inaugural vice president of mission integration at Seattle University. She recently spoke with CEIE Director Dr. Michael Reid Trice, about her work in mission integration and how we can incorporate these values into the vital life of Jesuit universities.

Punsalan-Manlimos facilitates and coordinates the many mission-related activities across the university, including a reconstituted Mission Council. She oversees both the Center for Jesuit Education and Campus Ministry. She was the former director of Catholic Studies, the inaugural director of the Institute for Catholic Thought and Culture and the faculty affiliate for Mission Integration.

Since rejoining Seattle University, Punsalan-Manlimos has piloted seminars on Catholic social thought and mission in teaching, scholarship and service, as well as new retreats and other opportunities for the university community to cultivate their spiritual lives. She has also convened colleagues throughout the university for conversations around different dimensions of mission, from the importance of creating a culture of dialogue to engaging racial justice as essential to the institution’s mission.
