MLK Celebration

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

Every January, we celebrate the life and legacy of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We reflect on the lessons he imparted, the dreams he shared, and how we can continue to respond to his call to act in great love.

2023 marks 60 years since the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where Dr. King gave his famous “I Have a Dream Speech”. Join us for an important conversation about what it looks like today to continue the work of fulfilling Dr. King’s Dream in our local context.

Our keynote speakers this year are local artist Hiawatha D., whose painting 10:22 AM, is held in the Chapel of St. Ignatius here on SU’s campus, and Veronica Very, founder of Wonder of Women International and the WOW Gallery based here in Downtown Seattle. As a couple and as individuals, they are deeply committed to creating space for healing, education, and liberation for Black people and use their work such as the ‘Dear Sista, I See You’ Healing Art Exhibition to celebrate the community and change narratives of trauma to narratives of celebration and empowerment.
