The Biology Department has four degree options (see Degree Programs) and offers many courses. Resources to help you navigate and understand your options include:
As part of the SU Core Curriculum, each Biology major must complete a Senior Synthesis.
All Biology Majors will complete the following SS series (revised as of 2018-19 school year):
|Fall:||BIOL 4991 (2 credits)||Research proposal topic selection, mentor selection and discussions, and career/education/future direction planning|
|Winter:||BIOL 4992 (2 credits)||Literature investigations, proposal development, completion of written proposal draft|
||BIOL 4993 (1 credit) + BIOL 4996 (1 credit)||Final proposal revisions and submission + Senior seminar|
All students will develop a research fellowship proposal similar to that required for the National Science Foundation. All students will work with a faculty mentor as they peruse scientific literature and develop their proposals. In the spring quarter, each student will participate in a seminar series and give a seminar presentation in which the research plan in the proposal is described to our departmental senior class and the faculty.
If you plan to graduate in Summer or Fall 2018, then you should have completed your Senior Synthesis courses and most of your project (SS).
If you plan to graduate in Winter 2019, Spring 2019, or Fall 2019, then you should enroll in SS courses during the 2018-19 school year (Fall-Winter-Spring). Register for BIOL 4991 in Fall 2018.
If you plan to graduate in Winter 2019, then you should enroll in BIOL 4996 in Spring 2018 and BIOL 4991 and 4992 in Fall 18 and Winter 19, respectively.
