Biography

Matthew Sorg is term faculty in the Department of Psychology at Seattle University, where he teaches courses in research writing, abnormal psychology, counseling, and crisis intervention. His favorite course to teach, Writing for Research in Psychology, uses a scaffolded curriculum that builds students' academic writing abilities from close reading through literature review, emphasizing writing as a form of thinking rather than a finished product.

Before entering psychology, Matt spent over a decade in library and information science, managing the discovery and curation of academic research at ProQuest and providing reference and instruction services in public libraries. This background in how research is organized, found, and evaluated directly informs his approach to teaching students how to engage with scholarly literature.

Matt is a licensed mental health counselor and EMDRIA-certified clinician in private practice at Epoché Psychotherapy, where he provides trauma-focused treatment using EMDR, Brainspotting, Flash Technique, and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy. His clinical focus areas include complex and attachment trauma, men's mental health, and LGBTQ+ affirmative practice. He is completing training in psychedelic-assisted therapy.

Prior to private practice, Matt worked in community mental health at Valley Cities Behavioral Health and served in multiple roles at Crisis Connections, progressing from crisis line volunteer to crisis services clinician supervising volunteers across nine Washington counties.

Matt holds an MA in Psychology from Seattle University, a BS in Psychology (summa cum laude) from Washington State University, an MLIS from the University of Washington, and a BA in English from Reed College.
