Biography
Dr. Donna Teevan is the Patrick J. Howell, SJ Professor of Theology in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, the Catholic Studies Program Director, and the Ellacuría Scholar for Mission Integration. She was the Rev. Louis Gaffney, SJ Chair in the College of Arts and Sciences of Seattle University from 2023 to 2025.
She is a systematic theologian specializing in Catholic theology who teaches courses in the University Core Curriculum, the Catholic Studies Minor program, and in the Theology and Religious Studies BA program. She received her BA (English) and MA (Theology) degrees from the University of Notre Dame and her PhD in systematic theology from the University of St. Michael’s College, Toronto School of Theology.
She is the author of Lonergan, Hermeneutics, and Theological Method (Marquette University Press). Her recent essays include “Cultural, Intellectual, and Institutional Challenges to Theology in U.S. Catholic Higher Education” in The Locus of the Theological Vocation, edited by Nathaniel Holmes, Ramon Luzarraga, and Nancy M. Rourke, Orbis Books (Expected publication date April 22, 2026) and "Bernard Lonergan on the Revolution in Catholic Theology," You Say You Want a Revolution”? 1968- 2018 in Theological Perspective, edited by Susie Babka, Elena Procario-Foley, and Sandra Yocum (Maryknoll, NY: Orbis Books). She has published in Theological Studies, Zygon: Journal of Religion and Science, Catholic Education: A Journal of Inquiry and Practice (now known as Journal of Catholic Education), and Teaching Theology and Religion.
In recent years she has taught courses in “Challenges to Christian Faith,” “Perspectives on Jesus,” and “Methods in Theology and Religious Studies.” In the past, she has taught courses such as “Women and Theology,” “Catholics in the U.S.,” “Medieval and Reformation Theology,” “Modern and Contemporary Theology,” and “Science and Theology.”
