About Me

I am from Seattle originally and completed my undergraduate degree (with no major or grades!) at The Evergreen State College. My educational and professional journey took me to the New Jersey-New York area and to Oregon for a number of years before coming back to my hometown. I live in Capitol Hill and love to explore new restaurants and try to eat lots of ice cream with my partner, daughter, and cat, Mr. Tubbs. I love my work. I accompany students on their journey of change, seeing and acknowledging them accomplish their personal, professional, and academic goals.

My name is Mayra Arellano, I am the Academic Advisor for Communication, English, Film Studies, and Political Science. I was born in Nayarit, Mexico but relocated to a small town in Washington when I was a young girl. I received an Associate of Arts degree at South Puget Sound Community College and completed my bachelor’s degree in Communications at the University of Washington Tacoma. During my undergraduate experience I served a Student Retention and Community Development Assistant, which is where I found a passion serving and supporting students both in and out of an academic setting.

About Me

Seattle U has become a second home to me. I was born in North Dakota and moved to Washington State in third grade, graduating from Auburn High School and then enrolling at Seattle U as a freshman to study Spanish and Sociology and later to complete a Master of Education in Student Development Administration. I was the first in my family to attend college and the highlight of my undergraduate experience was studying abroad in Puebla Mexico with the Latin American Studies Program. This sparked my love of travel, photography, and nature. In my spare time, I love to be with family, friends and cats, eat great food, and/or plan my next travel adventure.

About Me

I am an Academic Advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences, serving students in Public Affairs, International Studies, Performing Arts and Arts Leadership, Anthropology and Sociology, in addition to Psychology and Criminal Justice. I received my BA at a tiny liberal arts college in Florida and later went on to join AmeriCorps as a literacy tutor, shortly after graduating. For many years after graduating, I had different hats in the writing industry - staff writer, copyeditor, content editor, and ghost writer. I eventually found my way to Higher Ed by working as a professional Learning Assistant in the Writing Center of a community college - which led me to Seattle University's Office of Registrar as an Academic Specialist. I am excited to be part of the College of Arts and Sciences as an Academic Advisor! Beyond work, I am probably reading or writing or hiking with my dog, Emma, and spending time with my lovely husband.

About Me

I was born and raised in the greater Seattle area. I love the rain, reading historical fiction, and baking. I graduated from University of Washington with a BA in History and then came to Seattle U specifically for the Student Development Administration program. Over the years, I have worked in a wide range of student service areas and with many departments, but my favorite work has been career focused. I am excited to work with students, academic departments and other offices on campus to help implement and promote events, services and resources that will build students' professional formation skills. I look forward to helping you find internships, brainstorming mentoring opportunities, and encouraging you to take proactive steps to becoming the person you envision after graduation.
