About this Program

This program explores the Norwegian and Nordic models of addressing contemporary social issues. These issues encompass a wide range, including the climate crisis and the emerging importance of environmental sustainability. Additionally, the program explores topics such as national identity, gender equality, immigration, happiness, housing, labor rights, renewable energy, and economic inequality. 

Throughout the program, students will have the invaluable opportunity to engage with Norwegian and international college students that attend Norway’s Østfold University of Applied Sciences. Augsburg CGEE students and ØUAS students will dive into the intricacies of these issues, comparing and contrasting the Nordic approaches with those of the United States during projects and elective courses. Throughout the semester, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the diverse approaches taken by different nations in addressing these shared challenges of the twenty-first century.

Learn About:

  • The Indigenous peoples of Norway and greater Scandinavia (the Sámi People), their history, their contributions to society, and their voices in contemporary issues.
  • Norwegian successes and contradictions on climate change and sustainability practices.
  • The historical context of the Norwegian welfare state/system, including a review of the often oversimplification of the Nordic model from U.S. discourse.
  • How the current citizens of Norway experience daily life in the country.
  • Allemannsretten—the right to access nature, regardless of land ownership.​​​

Housing at Seattle University

Moving can be both costly and stressful, but careful planning can help minimize both. Start by creating a housing plan for before and after your study abroad experience to avoid the pressure of continuing to pay for rent at home. Program fees typically cover housing abroad, so if you expect to incur additional domestic rent expenses, be sure to include these in your budget. If possible, consider staying with family or friends temporarily before you depart or when you return to save on costs.
