About this Program

Throughout its history, Northern Ireland has grappled with an ongoing identity-based conflict that divides neighbors, communities, and the country itself. This history is physically present in the form of imposing walls (some 400 years old, others much more recent), and a border that has divided the island of Ireland for 100 years. Deeply segregated communities are byproducts of the trauma caused by years of violence. The conflict and its legacy ripples out into the language, governance, and everyday life of its citizens.

On this program, students will live, work, and learn in the city of Derry-Londonderry. There and other parts of Northern Ireland, including Belfast and border areas, students meet with community members directly impacted by violence, who now work to share stories and foster healing dialogue. Students will complete coursework that helps lend context to the history and culture of the region, while also completing an intensive internship in the community.  Internships are in a setting that focuses on one or more of the key themes: Diversity and Inclusion; Equality and Social Justice; Democracy and Active Participation; or Human Rights and Social Responsibility. Each internship location is unique, offering Augsburg CGEE students a chance to build real-world skills while taking part in projects that give back to the community.

Northern Ireland is a unique location to study abroad and to examine the ongoing work of maintaining a peaceful society.

Housing at Seattle University

Moving can be both costly and stressful, but careful planning can help minimize both. Start by creating a housing plan for before and after your study abroad experience to avoid the pressure of continuing to pay for rent at home. Program fees typically cover housing abroad, so if you expect to incur additional domestic rent expenses, be sure to include these in your budget. If possible, consider staying with family or friends temporarily before you depart or when you return to save on costs.

Housing Residence Life

Education Abroad typically recommends considering Seattle University on-campus housing for when students return from their programs, as Housing Residence Life staff are able to support students in securing housing, while adhering to student preferenceas best as they can.
