Program Summary
Intellectually, students will learn about and gain a better understanding of the face of neighborhood change in premier European cities like Berlin and Amsterdam. Like major U.S. cities, these cities are also affected by the global movement of capital, foreign real estate speculation/investment, rent and housing price escalation, and resulting gentrification and displacement. Given the historical context of redevelopment processes globally and locally, these pose real threats to neighborhood fabric, kinship, and cohesion while changing the character of neighborhoods. However, there exists a flourishing and multi-faceted resistance that was born out of long traditions of protest, and we will examine what these efforts look like and how they continue to shape the public dialogue and democracy amidst rapid change.
