Supporting Community Members Affected by Washington Wildfires

Dear Seattle University Community,

As wildfires continue to burn across Washington state, I ask that we keep in our prayers all those who have experienced loss, displacement, and uncertainty in recent days.

The impact of these fires has been felt across multiple communities, particularly in Spokane and Eastern Washington, where families have lost homes and livelihoods, thousands have been forced to evacuate, and many continue to face rapidly changing conditions. We know that members of the Seattle University community have family, friends, and personal connections in the affected areas. Some of our students, incoming students, faculty, and staff may be directly affected by these events or worried about loved ones in harm’s way.

As a Jesuit, Catholic university, we are called to accompany one another in times of hardship. We are working to identify and reach out to students who may be affected by the fires, offering support, connecting them with available resources, and exploring additional ways to assist students and families ahead of the start of the academic year.

The weeks may bring additional challenges as wildfire season continues. In moments like these, we are reminded of the strength of community and the importance of caring for one another with compassion, generosity, and hope. I am grateful for the many ways members of our Seattle University family support those in need and embody our commitment to the common good.

Students who are impacted are encouraged to contact the Dean of Students at deanofstudents@seattleu.edu so we can provide individualized outreach and support. Faculty and staff who know of students in need of support are asked to connect them with the Dean of Students, as well.

For those looking for ways to assist the Spokane community, please consider supporting organizations providing emergency response and recovery efforts, including the American Red Cross, local food banks, community foundations, and other trusted relief organizations serving Eastern Washington such as Catholic Charities of Eastern Washington.

Please join me in praying for those who have suffered loss and for the firefighters, emergency personnel, and community leaders working tirelessly to protect lives and communities.

May all those affected find comfort, strength, and hope in the difficult days ahead.
