A Message from Father Steve
Today is my first day serving as your interim president. I expect to be in this role for a short period of time, as the search for Seattle University’s next president is well underway and progressing steadily.
Dear Seattle University Community,
Today is my first day serving as your interim president. I expect to be in this role for a short period of time, as the search for Seattle University’s next president is well underway and progressing steadily. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and share how I see my role during this transition.
Some of you know me, while many of you do not. I previously served as Seattle University President for 24 years and, more recently, as the university’s chancellor. I grew up in Juneau, Alaska, entered the Society of Jesus and became a Jesuit priest — a path that eventually led me into Jesuit higher education and, fortunately, to Seattle University.
As interim president, my focus will be forward-looking. My responsibility is to help ensure that the university and the major initiatives already underway are on a strong path and well positioned for the next president to carry forward. This period calls for active stewardship, not new direction or change, and my intention is to support and advance what is already in motion.
To our students: you are the center of our mission. Supporting your learning, growth and wellbeing will continue to guide every decision we make.
When the Board asked me to step into this role, I took time — Jesuit time — to reflect. Seattle University, its students, faculty and staff, alumni, friends and partners have been a central part of my life and hold a special place in my heart. Serving and supporting this community in any way I can is something I am grateful to do.
Thank you for all you do for Seattle University and for our students. I look forward to working together with many of you and getting to know more of you during this time.
Go Redhawks!
Stephen V. Sundborg, S.J.
