Center for Social Transformation and Leadership

Engaged Scholarship for Justice, Transformation, and the Common Good

Scholarship. Reflection. Partnership. Action.

The Center for Social Transformation and Leadership (CSTL) is Seattle University's academic home for engaged scholarship. Rooted in the university's Jesuit mission and informed by the Ignatian tradition, CSTL connects faculty, students, community partners and alumni in the co-creation of knowledge that advances justice, human dignity, belonging, sustainability and the common good.

As a connector, convener and catalyst for engaged scholarship, CSTL creates opportunities for listening, reflection, discernment, partnership and action that contribute to meaningful social transformation.

Why CSTL Matters

Today's most pressing challenges require collaboration across disciplines, sectors and communities. Faculty, students, practitioners, community leaders and organizations each bring knowledge and perspectives that are essential to understanding and addressing complex social issues.

CSTL creates opportunities for people and ideas to come together through scholarship, reflection, partnership and action. By connecting academic expertise with community wisdom, the Center helps ensure that knowledge contributes to learning, justice and the common good.

Inspired by Seattle University's Jesuit mission, CSTL advances scholarship that is academically rigorous, publicly relevant and grounded in reciprocal relationships with communities.

Our Approach

We begin with humility by listening deeply to community experiences, knowledge, strengths, and aspirations.

We create space to consider what we are learning and how our work contributes to a broader understanding of justice and the common good.

We ask not only what can be done, but what should be done and how scholarship can best serve people and communities.

We believe meaningful scholarship emerges through reciprocal relationships where knowledge is co-created and shared for mutual benefit.

We seek scholarship that contributes to positive change, informs practice and policy, and advances human dignity and flourishing.
