The big game was, not surprisingly, a major source of news around these parts along with national issues with local implication.
The Super Bowl means that sports is always in the news in February and that was even more true this year with the Seahawks defeating the New England Patriots to take home a second Super Bowl trophy—followed soon after by the news that the team would go up for sale.
Natalie Welch, director of Seattle University’s MBA in Sport and Entertainment Management Program, was busy speaking about the pending sale of the Seahawks, talking to KOMO, KING-5 and the Seattle Times. Welch also appeared with Albers School of Business and Economics Marketing Department Chair Mathew Isaac on KING-5 to break down this year’s Super Bowl commercials.

The Redhawks men’s basketball team was featured prominently in a New York Times story about the rise of Asian college basketball players. The Seattle University baseball team’s involvement in the HBCU Classic against Jackson State was featured in a KCPQ story. Nursing alum Erin Martin was mentioned in a Bellingham Herald story about her upcoming appearance for Team USA in the Paralympics while Honolulu’s KITV did a feature on former Redhawk women’s soccer player Jourdyn Curran making the Philippines’ National Team.

Faculty Experts
Seattle University’s faculty experts continued to be busy weighing in on a variety of local and national issues.
Assistant Professor of Law Erin Carr’s weekly appearances on KING-5 News including discussions on arrests of journalists such as Don Lemon, the expansion of federal immigration actions, the U.S. Supreme Court striking down President Trump’s tariffs and voter rights. Carr’s law school colleague, Distinguished Practitioner-in-Residence Steve Tapia, analyzed a case of a family suing Tesla following a deadly crash for KOMO.

Nazune Menka, faculty director of the Northwest Center for Indigenous Law, spoke to the Seattle Times about how Washington tribes are preparing for immigration enforcement crackdowns. Albers School of Business and Economics Professors Joe Phillips and Brian Kelly were go-tos to analyze the Supreme Court’s decision on tariffs, with Kelly talking to KING-5 and KOMO and Phillips also speaking to KING-5.
Political Science Associate Teaching Professor Patrick Schoettmer joined KING for an interview on the United States’ military operation in Iran and English Associate Professor Carlyn Ferrari was quoted in a Chronicle of Higher Education story about bullying in higher ed.
Campus and Alumni News
It was a big month for Cornish College of the Arts at Seattle University Music Chair Johnaye Kendrick, whose singing group Saje took home a Grammy Award. KCPQ had a piece about the value for students having an award-winning teacher. We agree!
Influential publication The National Jurist ranked Seattle University’s Law School among the top in the country
