Seattle University Extends Admission Deadline

The new June 1 deadline comes as colleges and universities around the U.S. encounter financial aid delays.

Due to a delay by the federal government in turning over student financial aid information to colleges and universities, Seattle University is extending its Fall 2024 commitment deadline for first-year admits from May 1 to June 1.

This means that admitted first-year students have an extra month to accept an invitation to attend Seattle University next year as an incoming student. The extension is meant to relieve some of the stress facing students and families as they consider how to pay for college while waiting for the financial aid information.

Though the enrollment deadline has been pushed back, other deadlines, such as those for housing, remain the same.

"We understand the significance of financial planning in our students’ college decision-making process,” says Associate Vice Provost and Dean of Admissions James Miller. “Our Student Financial Services and Admissions colleagues are working hard to provide equitable resources and support during this year’s unique circumstances so our future Redhawks can make informed choices."

The Admissions Office will release Regular Decision admissions notifications on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 6. Students can access their decision within the Redhawk Admissions Portal. (Early Action applicants received their decisions in mid-December 2023.)

The extension comes in light of challenges related to data from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

In most years, Seattle University receives the financial data in October and begins issuing financial aid awards in late January or early February. That did not happen this year, as the federal government has been retooling the program.

Instead, federal education officials have advised colleges and universities it will begin releasing financial aid information in batches beginning in the first half of March. The Student Financial Services Office anticipates initial awards will be available in late March or early April.
