Marking five decades of impact, Albers tax preparation program continues to offer free filing support while giving students real-world experience.
2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the Low-Income Tax Preparation program at Seattle University. What began in 1975 as a small effort to help neighbors in need has grown into a decades-long engagement between Seattle University, United Way of King County, and the Internal Revenue Service. Over the years, Albers School accounting students and alumni have helped thousands of individuals and families file their taxes – free of charge – while gaining valuable hands-on experience.
The program reflects the Jesuit values at the heart of Albers: using knowledge in service of others. Each year, dozens of accounting students dedicate their evenings and weekends to helping community members navigate an often-overwhelming process. For many, it’s also their first opportunity to see the real impact of their education beyond the classroom.
Neha Kapoor, a current Master of Science in Accounting and Analytics student, volunteers for the program and shared her thoughts on the experience.
“It has been a privilege to volunteer for such a meaningful initiative that directly supports members of our community. I believe this program makes a significant impact by assisting low-income individuals and families in accurately filing their tax returns and accessing the tax credits and refunds they are entitled to. Beyond providing technical experience, my involvement has deepened my understanding of the social responsibility that accompanies the accounting profession. It has also allowed me to apply classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios, strengthening both my technical and interpersonal skills.
“What I especially value is how this experience has extended beyond volunteering. Whenever my family or friends discuss individual taxes, I now find myself confidently sharing insights, explaining available credits, and offering general tax advice based on what I’ve learned through the Low-Income Tax Preparation program. It’s rewarding to know that the knowledge I’ve gained through this volunteer work continues to make a difference both within and beyond the classroom.”
For half a century, Albers volunteers have made tax season easier for thousands of local families. As the program celebrates its 50th year, Albers is proud to continue this tradition of service, education, and community engagement. As we look ahead, Albers remains committed to ensuring future generations of business leaders continue learning by serving the local community through engagement like Low Income Tax Preparation. The program’s longevity is proof of what happens when education, service, and community come together. Here’s to the next 50 years of engagement!
