
Now in its fourth year, the Albers-SJIM Virtual Business Plan Competition gives Seattle University students the opportunity to collaborate with students from St. Joseph’s Institute of Management (SJIM) in Bangalore, India, to create a business solution for a pressing social problem. Teams made of mixed students from Albers and SJIM addressed the issue of universal digital inclusion.

The Business Plan Competition was started in 1998 by Dr. Harriet Stephenson, a Seattle University faculty member who began teaching in 1967. It is designed to help students and alumni in launching new business ventures, including for-profit businesses, not-for-profit businesses, corporate entrepreneurship, and social enterprise.

Funded by the Herbert B. Jones Foundation, the Jones Idea Challenge program challenges undergraduate entrepreneurial-driven students to solve real company problems. Student teams work with a team business coach and compete for $5,000 in cash prizes. By the end of the program, the Jones Idea Challenge produces innovative student solutions for business problems. Congratulations to Alejandro Ramirez (Team AR) for taking home the grand prize this year for his idea presented to The Madrone School!

On Wednesday, March 3, 2021, sixteen student teams participating in the Jones Idea Challenge pitched their ‘intra-preneurial’ ideas to 60 people in attendance including 16 student-led teams, 8 company judges, students, coaches, and community members. In its second year, the Jones Idea Challenge is a competition for undergraduate entrepreneurial-driven students. It challenges them to solve real company problems by working with a team business coach and compete for $5,000 in cash prizes. In the end, the program produces innovative student solutions for real business problems.
