Kicking It

Kicking It: Soccer to End Homelessness

Our project hosted a special soccer-themed event including the screening of the film "Kicking It," Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at the Egyptian Theatre, with special guest appearance by Lawrence Cann.  "Kicking It" is the 2008 documentary about the Homeless World Cup

Lawrence Cann, founder and CEO of Street Soccer USA, was our guest for a two-day visit to Seattle March 11-13. During his visit, Lawrence worked out with the Street Soccer Seattle team; toured the facilities of local providers who serve homeless youth, including YouthCare and Street Youth Ministries; and appeared on the KING-TV morning show, "New Day Northwest," along with Street Soccer Seattle leaders and team member Aaron.

At the "Kicking It" pre-party, guests mingled with Lawrence Cann and leaders and members of the Street Soccer Seattle team, plus other special guests: members of the Sounders FC, plus legendary coach and Sounders FC announcer, Peter Fewing, who recently returned to coach the Seattle U men's soccer team, and Julie Woodward, acclaimed coach of the Seattle U women's team and member of the Seattle U Athletics Hall of Fame. Sounders FC forward Roger Levesque greeted everyone via a taped message. Guests also watched a street soccer demonstration, enjoyed street food from the Taco Gol truck parked in front of the building and sampled complimentary Golazo beverages. Thanks again to Golazo for allowing us to use their headquarters on Capitol Hill for the party, and to all our guests.

Then the party moved over to the Egyptian to see the film and hear a Q&A with Lawrence.

Capping off the visit: The Street Soccer Seattle team's workout was the "Sound of the Day" on "Weekday" with Steve Scher on KUOW, Puget Sound Public Radio.

The event was a fund-raiser for Street Soccer Seattle, who later made a triumphant trip to the NYC Cup national street soccer tournament.
