Biography

Joseph Nicholas DeFilippis is Assistant Professor at Seattle University.  He received his B.A. at Vassar College, MSW (community organizing) at the Hunter College School of Social Work, and PhD. in Social Work and Social Research from Portland State University. Dr. DeFilippis’ research focuses on queer people of color, LGBT social movements, queer poverty, and marriage politics in neoliberal America. He has 20 years of experience in community work, including serving as Founding Director of Queers for Economic Justice, Director of SAGE/Queens, and welfare rights organizing. Dr. DeFilippis teaches courses in social justice, social welfare policy, political economy, community organizing, and sexuality.
