Changes to the Washington College Grant

Learn about the changes to the Washington College Grant and how Seattle University is responding

Studying

Recent state budget decisions have reduced funding for the Washington College Grant for students attending nonprofit private universities, beginning in Fall 2026. Because many Seattle University students and families rely on this funding, we want to clearly explain what is changing and how Seattle University is responding.

What Matters Most for Current and Returning Students

If you are a current or returning Seattle University undergraduate student who receives the Washington College Grant and maintains your current eligibility based on your family’s income:

  • Seattle University will replace the difference caused by the state’s reduced funding for the 2026-27 academic year
  • No separate application is required

This commitment is made possible through donor support and reflects Seattle University’s continued commitment to access and affordability.

Information for New Undergraduate Students

New undergraduate students who qualify for the Washington College Grant may receive a lower award than students in previous years due to the state funding reductions. As much as possible, Seattle University is filling the reduction with institutional grants and scholarships.

Financial aid offers reflect the aid for which students are eligible based on information provided through the FAFSA or WASFA. Seattle University remains committed to helping students and families clearly understand their financial aid options. In addition, Seattle University guarantees the amount of institutional gift aid.

Advocacy and Statewide Efforts to Restore Equity

Seattle University is actively advocating in Olympia, alongside partner institutions, to push for restoration of equitable state funding for students attending nonprofit private universities.

Students and families who wish to learn more or participate in advocacy efforts may visit SaveStudentAid.org, a statewide campaign supported by the Independent Colleges of Washington.
