The minor in data science introduces students to the technical and analytical skills needed to excel in one of the fastest-growing industries. The minor combines aspects of computer science, statistics, data analysis and modeling to solve real-world problems.

About this Program

Data Science

The Data Science minor equips students with the skills to turn data into meaningful insights. Through coursework in statistics, databases, data visualization, machine learning, and more, students develop a strong foundation in data-driven problem solving. Elective options allow students to explore specialized areas such as artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, big data, econometrics and experimental design.

We designed this minor, through both the electives and the flexible options for many of the requirements, to be able to align with students' majors. The Data Science minor is not designed to serve as a stand-alone area of study, but rather to specifically build data science skills that are interwoven with a variety of majors.

Our low student-faculty ratio allows you to work closely with professors who are deeply engaged with the professional engineering community and who bring practical, real-world applications into the classroom. What You'll Learn

  • Programming:  Introduction to programming and computing fundamentals, with emphasis on problem solving, design and style. Prior programming experience is not required.
  • Machine Learning: Learn machine learning and statistical modeling tools to aid in data-informed decision making.
  • Statistics: Basic statistical procedures, concepts, and computer applications used in the business world. Descriptive statistics, probability, decision theory, probability distributions, sampling distributions, statistical inference, chi-square analysis, and correlation.
  • Databases: Fundamental concepts of database design and applications, including relational database design, entity-relationship (ER) model, standard query language (SQL), transaction management, and triggers.
  • Data Visualization:  How to use visualizations to efficiently communicate information to specific audiences.
