Complimentary to the Seattle University curriculum, international academic and service programs challenge students to test the theories and analytical approaches to understanding humanity in a dynamic intercultural setting. These experiences produce powerful learning outcomes including:- cross-cultural communication and analytic skills
- a global perspective (a sense of the interconnectedness of people, ideas and problems)
- polished language proficiency
- intellectual growth
- intercultural and field-specific skill development
- deep self-reflection and exploration of one's relationship with humanity, nature, and spirituality in the Jesuit Catholic intellectual tradition
While participation on a study abroad program is neither a requirement nor an entitlement of a Seattle University degree, several majors and scholarship programs require some type of international experience.
Eligibility for participation includes:
- Good academic and conduct standing.
- Appropriate academic preparation as defined by the Department sponsoring the program.
- Skill and willingness to engage in demanding cross-cultural academic projects.
- Flexibility, confidence and fortitude in ambiguous independent situations.
- Aptitude to rely on a small, close-knit community of program participants for personal support.
- Ability to live and study effectively without requiring regular access to specialized medical care, counseling or other psychological support services.
