Primary Care Nurse Practitioner – Nurse-Midwifery Specialty
The Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (PCNP) track prepares graduates to provide direct care to individuals and families. Four specialties are available: Family Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatric Mental Health with Addictions Focus, Nurse-Midwife and Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner. Program graduates are prepared for independent and collaborative decision-making in disease prevention, health promotion and maintenance, physical and psychosocial assessment, and management of health and illness. Students in each of the primary care specialties have the opportunity to develop the nurse practitioner role in under-served and community-based settings.
The Nurse-Midwifery specialty is unique in that it includes not only the basic core competencies required by certifying agencies, but also a focus on global midwifery practice. It incorporates the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) Home-based Life Saving Skills curriculum into the program and also includes an optional clinical course in a low resource setting outside the United States. The Certified Nurse-Midwife specialty requires completion of 72-78 course credits and 690 clinical hours. Full-time and post-master’s study options are available (see below). Students choose between the Scholarly Project (3 credits) and Thesis (6 credits) for their capstone experience.
Seattle University College of Nursing was granted a full 10-year accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) in 2002. The CNM-MSN program is pre-accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education - ACME, 8403 Colesville Road, Suite 1550, Silver Spring, MD 20910 or call (240) 485-1802 - email jburke@acnm.org.
