MGMT 494/594: Evaluation of Strategic Opportunity in East and SE Asia

This course will explain the drivers behind China's meteoric rise. We will consider the particular role of the special economic zones of which Shenzhen is the prime example. In connection with this we will study the role of Hong Kong as a driver to the mainland economy. The course will involve a project that will explore developments that ultimately open up opportunities for the next wave of economies like Vietnam.

Instructor: David Reid

Teaching Method

We plan to hold three pre-departure meetings in which we will introduce the courses, help students understand the course requirements, the study tour schedule, and their responsibilities. Students will also learn about Asia culture, business etiquette, and political and economic status, and about the places and institutions we will visit. After the study tour, we plan to have a debriefing session and collect final papers. Students will be required to keep a daily journal and we will grade the journals for integration and reflection. In addition, students are required to participate in all company and institutional visits and to write an integrative report on topics appropriate to the course(s) they are taking on the study tour.

Academic Service Learning

Students will have an opportunity to work with PeaceTrees Vietnam, a Seattle-based humanitarian organization, in Quang Tri Province on international development projects through academic service-learning.
