Wismer Professorship in Gender and Diversity
A new Wismer Professor is selected every two years and is awarded release time from teaching to work on research, scholarship, or artistic projects. The Wismer Professor also receives a stipend of $7,000 to support summer activities plus $3,000 in funding for research materials or travel to conferences and/or research sites and programmatic funding. The Wismer Professor reports to the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs and the Provost.
The professorship is for a two-year term and will be awarded to a tenured faculty member who is an accomplished scholar with a strong commitment to gender studies. The Wismer Professor will serve the University as an intellectual leader, modeling academic excellence through a scholarly agenda and engaged campus conversation that is focused on issues of structural equality in keeping with our commitment to education for justice in the Jesuit and Catholic tradition.
Since 2009, the Wismer Professorship has served as a resource for a tenured faculty member who pursues targeted academic work and scholarship within the field of gender and its intersectionality with diversity. While this support remains, the University will look to the incoming chair for a thorough exploration of how the Wismer Professorship can and should take us into the next decade. An examination of the aims and direction of the Wismer is in order and the next chair will help guide the University as we move forward.
