Discontinuation of Domestic Student Health Insurance Plan & Mandatory Insurance Policy

Posted: May 16, 2022

Dear Students,

I am writing to announce an important change to Seattle University’s policy concerning student health insurance. Starting in Fall Quarter/Fall Semester 2022, Seattle University will no longer mandate insurance coverage for undergraduate domestic students and will no longer offer a university-sponsored student health insurance plan for domestic students. International students will still be required to have health insurance and will automatically be enrolled unless they provide evidence of comparable annual health insurance coverage.

Students currently enrolled in the Aetna student health insurance program, including the law/graduate voluntary plan, will continue to have coverage through Summer 2022. The last day of coverage for most students will be August 31, 2022; the one exception is law students, whose last day of coverage is July 31, 2022. Domestic student plans will not be renewed after these dates.

We encourage you to explore alternative options for health insurance coverage after Summer 2022. Be aware that your insurance plan ending is considered a “life event,” which allows you the opportunity to enroll in insurance plans outside of the normal open enrollment period. If you need a certificate of coverage letter, contact Aetna customer service at 1-877-480-4161. For additional information, see https://www.seattleu.edu/student-health/health-insurance/

While Seattle University will no longer offer a domestic student health insurance plan, we encourage all students to carry health insurance coverage.
