What does being first-gen mean to you?
Being first-gen means that even when your path is long and messy, with the right support and hard work you can accomplish anything.
What challenges/barriers have you faced or overcome during college?
Money, money, money. Also, since nobody in my family had navigated the process of applying and securing student aid, I made lots of mistakes knowing what I know now I wouldn't have made. I wish I was more aware of all of the aid packages and deadlines available to me! I don't regret my student loan debt, but I sure wish I didn't have it. :-)
What resource(s) or support helped you to be successful?
Dr. Mary Olson at George Fox University who mentored me and encouraged me to trust my abilities and go to grad school to become a therapist.
Do you have an inspirational quote that helped guide you through college?
"Don't be too attached to the outcome. Make the process your priority."
What advice would you give to someone else who is also first-gen?
Ask lots of questions. Don't assume that everybody knows stuff you don't know. People want to help you, just be brave enough to ask.
