What does being first-gen mean to you?

Being first-gen, to me, means being a part of the first generation of my family to grow up in the U.S. and to attend an institution of higher education. Being first-gen means holding the challenges of navigating a complex system while also honoring the sacrifices my family made for my education.

What challenges/barriers have you faced or overcome during college?

I struggled quite a bit my first and second year of college. Things started turning around for me after I became an orientation leader during the summer after my first year, and then joined a sorority on campus. I didn't understand this at the time, but once I started feeling a sense of social connection to the campus community (students and staff), I started also performing much better academically. I then became more comfortable approaching my faculty, stopping by office hours, and feeling more passionate about the work I was doing both in and outside of the classroom.

Do you have an inspirational quote that helped guide you through college?

People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed. - Audrey Hepburn

What advice would you give to someone else who is also first-gen?

It will be hard at times, but have faith. There are a lot of resources which can sometimes be overwhelming and difficult to utilize, and they exist to help you succeed. Stop by my office (consider this an invitation!), and we'll work through them together.
