Recap: Graduation Events

July 14, 2016

June was filled with exciting commencement events celebrating and honoring the school’s graduating students. Graduates were joined by faculty, staff, students, family and friends at the graduating student blessing, commencement brunch, baccalaureate mass, and finally the commencement ceremony.

The graduating student blessing and BBQ is a highly anticipated service held each year by the School of Theology and Ministry in the Chapel of St. Ignatius. Planned by students of the school and facilitated by school faculty, staff and students, the service was an opportunity for graduating students to reflect on their experience at the School of Theology and Ministry in the presence of one another. The blessing incorporated scripture, music, poetry and art to display the unique character of the school’s community, specifically the class of 2016. Following the blessing, attendants celebrated over a BBQ dinner.

The Seattle University commencement brunch, held at the Sheraton in downtown Seattle, joins undergraduate and graduate students along with their friends and family to celebrate their accomplishment. Fr. Steve Sundborg, SJ addressed the crowd sharing about his own family and the class of 2016 was welcomed into the alumni association. Graduating students had fun with the SU photo booth and went home with their official Seattle University Alumni license plate frame.

Later that evening, in a more solemn space, graduates celebrated mass together at St. James Cathedral.

The graduate student commencement ceremony took place the following day in Key Arena where graduate students from programs throughout Seattle University excitedly awaited the conferring of their diplomas. President of Georgetown University, John Degioia gave the commencement address and received an honorary degree. Then student speaker Neshia Alaovae, MA in Psychology addressed the crowd challenging the group to ask: “who is not represented?” in the spaces they find themselves. The School of Theology and Ministry was represented well throughout the ceremony as MA in Transforming Spirituality student Kathleen Hosfeld gave the invocation and Master of Divinity student Corey Passons gave the benediction.
