About the SUMSS Program

The SUMSS program supports students in three ways: Scholarship Funds, Academic Support, Career Development Support. The program also offers an early opportunity for students to engage in mentored undergraduate research.

Scholarship Funds

The SUMSS program covers up to $10,000 per year in tuition expenses for students. Funds are renewable for up to four (4) years of study.

Academic Support

SUMSS participants receive additional advising and support to help them succeed across four years.

  • Scholars study together in a cohort and have a community to rely on facilitated by faculty mentors
  • Faculty and advisors organize events to help students connect with other Scholars from all academic years for knowledge sharing

Career Development

All SUMSS participants will engage in an intentional four-year career exploration process designed to enhance their readiness for the job market after graduation.

Scholars will also engage in a one-quarter data science research course, where they learn how to apply data science techniques to research projects in the biological and chemical sciences.

Scholars and faculty advisors will also engage with the Career Engagement Office and other resource offices on campus to develop their professional skills for applications and interviewing.
