December 19, 2014

Charlie Rackson (far right), a senior majoring in physics, mathematics, and humanities, received the John Van Zytveld Award in the Physical Sciences for his presentation titled "Capacitance Detection in the Development of a High Sensitivity Torsion Balance" at the Murdock College Science Research Conference held in Vancouver, WA in November 2014. A panel of judges and fellow undergraduate researchers recommended Charlie for selection based on the creativity of his project, his knowledge of the material, the quality of his presentation, and his ability to answer questions from the audience.

The award consists of a ribbon, a cash prize to support Charlie's educational costs and the College's undergraduate summer research program, and a gift for Dr. Woo-Joong (Andy) Kim, his faculty research advisor. Under the mentorship of Dr. Kim of the Department of Physics, Charlie has been actively engaged in undergraduate research since 2011.
