Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Alvin Sturdivant has been named Vice President for Student Development, a position he has held on an interim basis since June.

Alvin is well regarded across campus for his unwavering commitment to the students of Seattle University. Since arriving at Seattle U in 2010, he has been involved in leading and strengthening virtually all aspects of the student experience, including housing, health and well-being, recreation, activities programming and spiritual development. As co-chair of the President’s Committee on Diversity and Inclusive Excellence and in other capacities, Alvin has worked tirelessly to create a campus climate that is welcoming of all students and fosters a sense of belonging.

Consistent with our Jesuit educational mission, he has collaborated with faculty and staff to ensure that the university’s co-curricular programs complement and reinforce the intellectual, professional and ethical development of our students.

With 17 years in higher education, Alvin brings to this role extensive experience as an exceptional educator. Beyond his work in Student Development, he has published and given presentations on a wide range of subjects both regionally and nationally. For the past six years he has shared his expertise as an adjunct faculty member in the College of Arts and Sciences. Recognized as a leader nationally, Alvin is vice president of the Association of College and University Housing Officers–International (ACUHO-I) and will be president of the association in 2019.

I am grateful to Alvin for his continuing efforts on behalf of our students and the outstanding leadership he brings to the division. Please join me in congratulating him on this appointment and let us all join him in working to enhance further the student experience at Seattle U.

Sincerely,

Stephen V. Sundborg, S.J.
President
