Rest in Peace, Peter Ely, S.J.

April 15, 2020

Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,

We invite you to come together as a campus community to share your gratitude for and remembrances of the life of our friend and colleague, Fr. Peter Ely, S.J. We will host an online service this coming Thursday, April 16, from 12:30-1:30 p.m., as a time to gather from wherever we may be to remember Peter and offer our thanks, prayers and thoughts.

The team in MarCom has put together a Gratefully Remembering Fr. Peter Ely, S.J. memorial page and we encourage you to visit the site and share brief words of thanks for a way Peter touched your life or any remembrances.

With gratitude for Peter,

Stephen V. Sundborg, S.J.
President

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

It is with great sadness that we share the sad and tragic news that Fr. Peter Ely, S.J. died today.  Peter had been on a walk and was returning to his room in Campion Hall when he fell outside the building, seemingly from a heart attack from which he was unable to be revived.

A beloved teacher, mission leader and member of our Jesuit community for many years, Peter has touched a great many lives and was a source of inspiration to all who knew him. We are planning to hold a memorial service at some point in the future, when we are able to gather in person and celebrate his life.

In the meantime, we will plan alternative means of grieving his loss and honoring his memory that will be communicated to you as we are able.

As we join together in grieving Peter’s loss, let us recall the many ways Peter’s life and legacy will remain with us.

Fr. Steve
