Message on Capitol Riots

January 6, 2021

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

What we have witnessed today at the United States Capitol is abhorrent and counter to the democratic values and peaceful transfer of power that are hallmarks of our system of government and the rule of law.

All elected leaders have a responsibility to denounce the rioters and violence and call for a stop to the efforts to undermine the legitimacy of the presidential election and counting of the electoral votes. As President-elect Biden said earlier today, this is an unprecedented assault on our democracy that shocks and saddens us all. It is time to come together in unity and support for the incoming administration.

Let us remain particularly attentive inside and outside of the classroom to each other’s needs during this time. Students, should you need them, please remember there are a number of helpful physical, emotional and spiritual support services available to you through the Office of Student Development.

Together, we move forward in deepening our commitment to our educational mission of empowering leaders for a just and humane world, in care for one another and in prayer for peace during this traumatizing time.

Sincerely,

Stephen V. Sundborg, S.J.
President
