I want to share my personal views with you on climate change and divestment. I am deeply disappointed and concerned with President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord. I have joined other university, business and elected leaders in reaffirming a commitment to our climate goals. I also want to express my personal support for divestment from fossil fuels and continuing to explore how we can do so responsibly. Climate change is a defining issue for our students’ generation and their future. I stand with all who are committed to addressing it with a sense of urgency. Seattle University has made significant progress in recent years through our operations and programming to do our part, including the work of the President’s Committee for Sustainability (PCS) in implementing our Climate Action Plan.

I am pleased to announce that Sherman Alexie and Maggy Barankitse will speak at our undergraduate and graduate commencement ceremonies, respectively. Both individuals are voices for the marginalized and dispossessed and both are considered friends of our university. It will be wonderful to welcome them back to Seattle University for our commencement at KeyArena on June 11.

It is my pleasure to announce that David Leigh, S.J., professor of English, is the 2017-2018 recipient of the McGoldrick Fellowship. Named for Father James McGoldrick, a beloved Seattle University Jesuit, the fellowship recognizes an extraordinary faculty member who embodies the mission and values of our institution.

As I reflect on the winter months at Seattle University, I do so with a deep sense of gratitude and humility after being reappointed by the Board of Trustees on Feb. 23 to a new five-year term. Many of you have made it possible for us to accomplish so much over the past 20 years and I am forever indebted. I also greatly appreciate the alumni, faculty and staff who took part in the review of my presidency and offered insights into how we can best move forward in the years ahead. I know we have much work to do as we chart the university’s future course together.

After meeting with members of the search committee and giving careful consideration to evaluations from our faculty, staff and students, I have decided not to offer the position of provost to either of our current candidates. While both finalists are excellent individuals with strong, relevant experience, I believe we are faced with a unique set of challenges and opportunities that demand we select an exceptional leader with a clear and compelling vision for our university and its academic programs and initiatives. We intend to reopen the search in late summer and interview final candidates on campus in the fall.

I believe it is important to reiterate what I said following last November’s presidential election and share with you the university’s deep concern about the immigration executive order issued by the new administration in Washington.
