Excellence in Leadership Award

Gary Fernandes

Lab Manager
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Philip Orlow

Supervisor
Mailing Services

Gary Fernandes embodies the Seattle University mission in how he models cura personalis and how he practices servant-leadership in promoting the care of the whole person. Even before the pandemic, Gary continually put reflection into action to improve the technical, physical, and spiritual well-being of students, staff, and faculty. Since the lock-down, Gary’s work in creating, packing, shipping, and tracking course kits has made half a dozen of the department’s lab or lecture — lab classes run smoothly despite the far-flung students and the complex, sensitive hardware they have to use. He has mailed kits nationally and internationally, providing multiple easy means of return for students in Seattle and worldwide.

In this past year Mailing Services underwent rigorous operational changes due to the pandemic and lack of personnel. The University moved most of its operations to online and Mailing Services being an essential function remained fully operational. Given the added stress in working through the pandemic and the constant fear of being infected, Philip remained composed under these extreme circumstances and ensure the department adhered to campus guidelines pertaining to Covid19. He quickly sizes up critical situations by keeping the overarching goal at the helm.
