Academic Courses Abroad

How do I get started?

It is never too early to start thinking about education abroad!! For information on program types, transferring credits, and financial aid please visit the Education Abroad website: . In the meantime, here are five things you should do to get started in the process:

  1. Plan Ahead – Inform your academic advisor of your goals to study abroad, even if you are still uncertain of where you want to go or when.
  2. Arm Yourself with Information – Visit the Education Abroad website to learn more about the programs available
  3. Learn the Process – Attend an info session, offered each week, in the Education Abroad Office. Call (206) 296-2226 or visit PAVL 124 to sign up.
  4. Internationalize Your Curriculum – Start taking courses in language or a region of interest. Study abroad options increase significantly for students with previous language and/or cultural knowledge.
  5. Keep an Open Mind – You can study abroad to locations on almost every continent in programs lasting from two weeks to as long as one year. Talk with an education abroad advisor to learn about opportunities that might be right for you!

How to Apply for SUCON Education Abroad Courses

Regardless of the program you are applying for, ALL STUDENTS are required to submit an application via HORIZONS, the Education Abroad Office online application system. The following are instructions for how to apply:

  1. Enter the HORIZONS application system. You will log in using your SU email address and password.
  2. Select the program you are interested in to begin your application.
  3. You will answer a series of standard immersion questions and a set of questions specific to nursing and the program you have selected.

In addition, you will need to obtain letters of support/recommendation from those who can speak to your potential for success in an education abroad program.

  • Students applying to the short-term program are required to have two recommendations from SU faculty members.
  • Students applying to the long-term program must have at least one recommendation from SU faculty. It is ideal for the second recommendation to also be an academic reference.

The faculty members must complete the recommendation in the HORIZONS system. Please provide the faculty members with instructions to complete the recommendation online.

Your submission of an application indicates that you grant permission to the CON to review your unofficial transcript to verify your GPA and academic standing as part of the application process.

All applications for short-term programs (≤ 4 weeks: Belize, Nicaragua) are due to HORIZONS by December 22, 2019.
