Foreign-trained lawyers can sit for the bar and practice in any state after earning a two-year J.D. degree from a U.S. university. Josie Mitchell, associate director of the Center for Professional Development at the Seattle University School of Law, says getting various experiences such as externships and volunteer work while in law school is important. If international students can demonstrate to employers that they have a good foundational understanding of U.S. and state law, "and are willing to network with employers to market themselves, they will do well," she says.
