Ken Allan, assistant professor of art history, published an article, "Ed Ruscha, Pop Art and Spectatorship in 1960s Los Angeles," which has been accepted at Art Bulletin. While Ruscha's work, a piece of which appears here, is often described as deadpan and coolly indifferent to the viewer, Allan argues that he was deeply concerned with the nature of looking in the paintings and photographic books that launched his career in the early 1960s. The article will appear in the journal's September 2010 edition.
