Philosophy Professor James Risser's new book, The Life of Understanding: A contemporary hermeneutics, has been published by Indiana University Press. In the book, Risser places 20th century philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer in dialogue with Plato and develops themes pertaining to hermeneutics.
"Plato provides new directions in hermeneutics and new possibilities for the life of understanding the understanding of life," Risser said.
Risser, who received his Ph.D. from Duquesne University, joined the College of Arts and Sciences faculty more than 30 years ago. He directed the Honors Program from 2006-12. His scholarship focuses on contemporary philosophy, hermeneutics, existentialism, and phenomenology.
