Criminal Justice Assistant Professor Peter Collins and Law Professor Robert Boruchowitz received a $50,000 research grant from the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington State to examine the costs of the death penalty as it is currently enforced. The study, "Examining the Economic Costs of Life Without the Possibility of Parole as an Alternative to the Death Penalty in Washington State," will include an estimate of costs if the death penalty were replaced with life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Eighteen states and the District of Columbia have abolished the death penalty.
