Charles Tung, associate professor of English, was invited to speak in the Critical and Cultural Theory Lecture Series at Evergreen State College. His lecture, "Unmaking Time: Modernism's Time Machines," focused on the relationship between the obsession with time in modern art and literature and the fantasy of travelling through history that is now ubiquitous in popular culture. Modernism clearly called attention to itself not only as a vehicle for experiencing and moving in time, but as a technique for rethinking that experience and movement, and for exposing the way art's own devices, in concert with psychological, social, and historical mechanisms, structure and produce different kinds of time.
