Charles Tung, assistant professor of English, presented a paper, "Flux, Flows, and Floods," at the American Comparative Literature Association meeting in New Orleans. The paper explored the relations among the following: modernist conceptions of temporal flux and the stream-of-consciousness technique, the postmodern textualization of history in Julian Barnes's A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters, popular fantasies of global disaster such as the film 2012 and the TV show "Flashfoward," and the call in ecocriticism for a "paleontology of the present."
