Sven Arvidson, director of Liberal Studies and senior faculty fellow of the Center for Faculty Development, published "Interdisciplinary Common Ground: Techniques and Attentional Processes" in Issues in Interdisciplinary Studies, the flagship, peer-reviewed journal of the Association for Interdisciplinary Studies. Common ground in interdisciplinary research is the pivot from disciplinary to interdisciplinary perspective.
Using insights from psychology, philosophy and examples of sophomore level student work from the SU interdisciplinary liberal studies Methods of Interdisciplinary Research course (to show that interdisciplinarity can be accomplished at various levels of expertise), Arvidson illustrates the process and structure of attention in interdisciplinary work.
